You’ve probably noticed that engagement rings are expensive in Sydney’s CBD. At the same time, you’re probably not surprised! Engagement rings are renowned for being pricey, but why is that? What are the features of an engagement ring that add dollars to the price tag? If you want to roll all those features together so they could be described in one word, it would be this: quality.
Let’s start with the diamond, and the 4Cs – cut, color, clarity, and clarity. The higher the quality of any of these things, the more you can expect to pay. This is only natural, given that a diamond is a very rare and special thing and the perfect symbol of a loving relationship. Certified diamonds are worth every dollar, but they do add to the total cost of an engagement ring.
The choice of metal in an engagement ring also gives you a clue why some rings are pricier than others. Platinum is the rarest metal in the world, and when it’s used in a ring you can expect to pay for the privilege of having that extra-precious metal on your finger. Mind you, platinum is highly durable, and its pale sheen does accentuate diamonds and other stones like no other metal can. At the other end of the scale, silver is more widely available than platinum and this is reflected in the lower cost of engagement rings that use this metal.
Custom-made engagement rings are unique, and you can surely expect to pay a little more for a one-off design. This is a cost many of us are happy to bear, given the special nature of an engagement ring. It’s even more special when it is crafted by an expert jeweler – and in the right hands, a custom-made engagement ring can be made into a truly special thing. A work of art that says so much.
Of course, not every engagement ring is expensive. It is possible to buy lower-cost rings, but it is a case of getting what you pay for. The quality factor that makes such a difference to pricing is probably lower – the diamond might not rank too highly on the 4Cs scale. The metal might be softer, less brilliant and not as strong. The craft and skill that went into the making of the ring might not be of the highest standard, certainly not what you’d get from a master jeweler.
At the end of the day, it comes down to this: the higher the quality, the higher the price. That’s the way it is with most things, and it certainly explains why an engagement ring – a good engagement ring – is expensive in Sydney’s CBD. That’s not to say it isn’t worth it. When you think of what that ring represents, it’s probably very reasonable to invest a little extra money. An engagement ring is a lot like love – it really is a very difficult thing to put a price on!
